St. Peter Claver School opened its doors in 1921, dedicated to the proposition that African American children can and must excel. The school provides a safe and resourceful environment devoted to developing the whole child. We embrace our heritage with a holistic approach that affirms our faith and strengthens our self-esteem.
The school was founded and operated by the Sisters of the Blessed Sacrament, a religious order of sisters dedicated to evangelize to the African American and Indian communities. In 2005, St. Peter Claver School became a centralized, therefore changing its’ name to St. Peter Claver Catholic Central School.
St. Peter Claver Catholic Central School envisions a futrue that calls for growth, new programs and greater specializastion and new sources of support. In this context, the school community shares a vision to ensure and safe and healthy environment for learning, offering enrichment programs, technology, high school preparation, and attaining a higher level of student proficiency in language arets and math; reducing the number of students taking remedial courses at the high school level.
In 2009, St. Peter Claver Catholic Central School became SACS CASI Accredited.
The school continues to be a parish and community based school. Over sixty percent of the students are from the parish. St. Peter Claver Catholic Central School continues in its mission to give young African American children a chance to compete in large part due to the support of the parishioners and the determination of the school community.
For over 88 years, St. Peter Claver Catholic Central School has been a leading producer of outstanding black African American students who have matriculated successfully to several of our city’s most selective Catholic and public schools.
In 1984 the Sisters of the Blessed Sacrament and the Josephite Fathers decided to leave the parish and school due to a lack of vocations in their orders. The Society of St. Edmund, which has a tradition of serving African Americans in the South and empowering lay leadership, proudly answered the call of the parish to help lead it into the 21st century.
